Colorado Highways Photo Gallery:
Michael Summa's Classic Colorado Collection

Before digital cameras and roadgeek websites, Michael Summa crisscrossed Colorado on his bike and car taking pictures of road signs. Most of his pictures date from the late 1970s to late 1980s. They show older styles of signs Colorado used to use that had survived to the time he was taking the pictures.

All photos by Michael Summa.

1976. Southbound US 385 at US 138, Julesburg. Old whiteboard guide sign with a US shield that's not quite the right shape.

1979. Eastbound SH 14 at SH 52 near Raymer. Whiteboard turn sign.

1979. US 6 eastbound from Glenwood Springs going into Glenwood Canyon with a button copy speed limit sign. I-70 hadn't even started being built yet.

1979. Cutout style US markers on US 6-85 (Vasquez Blvd) in Commerce City north of 74th Ave.

1979. Really old version of a marker sign for Vasquez Blvd at the SH 2 junction in Commerce City. More than one number being combined in the same marker is something that is very rare in the entire US.

1979. Another sign for Vasquez Blvd at SH 2 in Commerce City. The US 85 marker is a knock-off of the pre 1967 state marker.

1983. Whiteboard route/destination sign at Wahsatch Ave/Cimmaron St in Colorado Springs. This was before US 24 was routed out of downtown in the mid-1990s.

1983. Nighttime image of another whiteboard at Muddy Pass. Again it has the not-quite-right US shape.

1983. Older (white) and newer (green) versions of route/destination signs in Dinosaur. This time the whiteboard US marker is the right shape.

1983. SH 105 at its turn at Perry Park Rd/Spruce Mountain Rd in Palmer Lake.

1985. Great shot of the former layout of the US 6/SH 119 triangular intersection in Clear Creek Canyon. Just out of range around each curve is Tunnel #4, abandoned when the junction was reconstructed in the late 1990s.

1985. Whiteboard junction sign on northbound SH 71 at Limon. Note 287 is in a two digit-sized shield, unusual for Colorado.

1985. Another whiteboard route/destination sign at the end of SH 94.

1987. State line on SH 11 near Julesburg. Either this was before they switched to the "Mountains and More" welcome signs or it survived.

1987. Southbound US 50 south of Grand Junction. This was about the same time SH 146 was renumbered as an extension of SH 141.

1987. Cutout and modern forms of the US route marker in Julesburg.

1988. Going across the top of Dillon Dam.

1989. Another whiteboard at the US 50/287 junction northwest of Lamar.

1989. Northbound US 287 at the US 40 junction, Kit Carson.

1989. Whiteboard route markers on US 287 north of Springfield.

1989. Cutout reassurance markers (which look almost new) somewhere north of Springfield.
