The new Steel Street Bridge opened to vehicle traffic the morning of August 19, 2002. The new structure would have two 12-foot traffic lanes, two bike lanes, and two 10-foot sidewalks. The photo at right shows the view southbound on the completed bridge (13Sep02).

This photo is of the expansion joint at the south end of the bridge (13Sep02). The joint is where the deck meets the approach slab.

The north end of the new bridge (13Sep02).

Looking north along the east side of the bridge (13Sep02). In this photo you can see the fencing that was used along the sides of the bridge, as well as one of the large, concrete "monuments" in the middle of the bridge. In the middle of the monument is an in-wall fire hose connection.

Another view of a monument, looking west off the bridge along northbound I-25 (13Sep02).

Southbound on I-25 at the completed bridge (13Sep02). Note the large, white sign announcing the street name. Other T-REX bridges are getting a similar sign, and I've never seen anything else like it.

Time Lapse Movie [396k]
View a QuickTime movie that shows a time lapse of the Steel Street Bridge from January to September 2002. Photos were taken from the same spot on the temporary pedestrian bridge looking south. Cobbled together with Apple's iMovie.
