E End: Jct US 24 at Malta
W End: Becomes Lake CR 5A north of the Leadville
Fish Hatchery
Counties: Lake
Annual Average Daily Traffic (2008):
- 1100 at US 24
- 70 at west end
Guide: From
US 24, SH 300 heads west across the Arkansas River plain. At the
Leadville
Fish Hatchery, the road curves toward the north, then has an oddball
section with several sharp curves as it goes through a pine grove on
the side of a hill. About a mile after the fish hatchery SH 300
curves toward the east and abruptly ends, becoming CR 5A. History:
SH 300 became a state highway in 1939. At first, it
started at Malta, went west as now, then from the fish
hatchery it looped back to the northeast to Leadville, then
went east via Mosquito Pass to Alma. However, it was not
built over the pass yet, only projected. By 1954, most of it
had been turned back and SH 300 went only west from US 24
for 3mi as now. Paved by 1963.

Milepost Guide:
- 0.00: SH 13, Hamilton (begin SH 317 in Moffat County)

Annual Average Daily Traffic (2008): 200
Guide:
From
SH 13, SH 317 heads east up the Williams Fork River, hugging the north
side of the valley. While it may be paved, SH 317 is a narrow, minor
road, not serving anything other than a few farms/ranches. At Pagoda,
SH 317 ends and becomes a gravel county road. Don't be fooled by maps
showing a town of Pagoda, there isn't anything there other than a
cemetary on a hill above the road.

- Pagoda Cemetary. Several hundred feet west of the end of SH 317 is the gate leading to the cemetary. (May 2008)
- End SH 317. The road turns to gravel and becomes CR 29. (May 2008)
History:
SH 317 became a state highway in 1939. Originally, it
went from SH 13 at Hamilton east and north all the way to US
40 at Hayden. By 1954, only the spur east to Pagoda was
left. Was not paved until 1992.

W End: Utah Border (no connection to a state
highway)
E End: Jct US 40 just west of Maybell
Counties: Moffat
Places: Dinosaur National Monument, Sunbeam, Maybell
Annual Average Daily Traffic (2008):
- 260 at Utah border
- 240 east of CR 10
- 360 at US 40
Guide:
From US 40, SH
318 heads northwest down the Yampa River. At Sunbeam, the Yampa veers
southwest, while SH 318 continues northwest. On the north end of
Dinosaur National Monument, it picks up a valley of the Green River,
known as Browns Park, and then follows that up northwest to the Utah
border. Near the Utah border SH 318 passes Browns Park National
Wildlife Refuge. At the border SH 318 does not connect with a Utah
state highway, rather it becomes a gravel Daggett County road which
eventually connects with US 191.

east of the Utah border. In background is Cold Spring Mountain. Photo

History:
SH 318 became state highway in 1939, and went from US 40
about half way to Utah. By 1946 it was extended a little
more northwest to the Green River. But then by 1954, most of
it had been turned back and it was a spur that went from US
40 only as far as Sunbeam. By 1955 the spur was lengthened
to 9mi long.
By 1968 SH 318 was extended a few miles northwest again,
this time to Sand Wash Creek. By 1970 it was extended
significantly, and reached from US 40 *40.50mi to Vermillion
Creek. About the northwest half of the highway still was
gravel. By 1974 it was extended to ~6mi short of the Utah
border, but then finally extended all the way to Utah by
1975. Also by 1975 it was entirely paved.
